According to recent statistics, road accidents rank among the leading causes of death in the country, exacerbated by reckless driving, overloading, and the use of substandard vehicles. Infrastructure issues such as potholes, narrow roads, and a lack of pedestrian pathways further compromise safety. Many rural areas remain disconnected from main transport networks, hindering economic growth and access to essential services. Urban centers face traffic congestion and inefficient public transport systems, affecting productivity and quality of life. Addressing these challenges requires a comprehensive approach that involves increased government investment, the adoption of modern engineering standards, and enhanced collaboration with private stakeholders to fund and manage road development projects. Public awareness campaigns, stricter law enforcement, and regular vehicle inspections are also critical to improving safety.  

Innovative transport solutions can revolutionize mobility in Cameroon, addressing the distinct challenges faced by urban and rural communities. In urban areas, integrating smart technology into traffic management systems can reduce congestion and improve efficiency. Ride-hailing services and app-based carpooling platforms offer cost-effective and convenient alternatives to traditional taxis. For rural areas, innovations such as solar-powered electric motorcycles and drones for delivering goods and medical supplies can address connectivity gaps. Low-cost, durable road construction techniques like stabilized earth roads can also improve access in remote regions. Cameroon can also explore modern payment systems for public transport, such as mobile-based ticketing, to simplify fare collection and reduce fraud. By fostering a culture of innovation, supported by government incentives and private investment, the country can enhance its transport infrastructure to meet the needs of a growing population.  

Effective policies and strict enforcement mechanisms are critical to improving road safety and transport accessibility in Cameroon. Current gaps in regulations, including lenient penalties for traffic violations and weak oversight of public transport operators, undermine efforts to ensure safety. Policies should prioritize mandatory driver training programs, regular vehicle inspections, and the introduction of speed limits on major highways. Expanding access to road safety education in schools and communities can instill a culture of responsible road use from an early age. Enforcement mechanisms, including deploying advanced technologies like speed cameras and automated ticketing systems, can improve compliance. Additionally, creating special traffic enforcement units within the police force can strengthen monitoring and reduce corruption. The government must also focus on accessibility for vulnerable groups, such as the elderly and people with disabilities, by mandating inclusive design standards for public transport and pedestrian infrastructure.
