Pedestrians are among the most vulnerable road users in Cameroon and across Africa. Many road traffic accidents involve individuals simply walking to school, work, or markets. The lack of safe crossings, poor road infrastructure, and risky driving behavior all contribute to this challenge.
Protecting pedestrians is a fundamental part of building a safer transport system. Every life saved begins with awareness, responsibility, and proper road use.
Understanding the Risks
Pedestrian accidents often occur due to distractions, speeding vehicles, poor visibility, and lack of designated crossing areas. In many communities, people are forced to share roads with fast-moving traffic, increasing the level of danger.
Children and elderly individuals are particularly at risk due to their limited mobility and reaction time.
Building Safer Walking Environments
Improving pedestrian safety requires a combination of infrastructure, education, and enforcement. Safe crossings, traffic signs, and community awareness programs all contribute to reducing accidents.
SATM–Cameroon works to educate both drivers and pedestrians on their shared responsibility for road safety.
Shared Responsibility Saves Lives
Road safety is not the responsibility of one group alone. Drivers must respect pedestrians, and pedestrians must also follow safe crossing practices. When both sides act responsibly, accidents can be significantly reduced.
Through education and community engagement, safer walking environments can be achieved, ensuring that every journey—no matter how short—is safe.
